Sin is often used to mean an action that is prohibited or considered wrong; in some religions (notably some sects of Christianity) sin can refer to a state of mind rather than a specific action. Colloquially, any thought, word, or act considered immoral, shameful, harmful, or alienating might be termed "sinful". The word Sin occurs 448 times in 389 verses in the KJV. In the Spanish language, sin means "without". When an archer misses the bull's eye, it is called a sin. Here is the Strong's version of Sin:
to sin, miss, miss the way, go wrong, incur guilt, forfeit, purify from uncleanness
a) (Qal)
1) to miss
2) to sin, miss the goal or path of right and duty
3) to incur guilt, incur penalty by sin, forfeit
b) (Piel)
1) to bear loss
2) to make a sin-offering
3) to purify from sin
4) to purify from uncleanness
c) (Hiphil)
1) to miss the mark
2) to induce to sin, cause to sin
3) to bring into guilt or condemnation or punishment
d) (Hithpael)
1) to miss oneself, lose oneself, wander from the way
2) to purify oneself from uncleanness
So what are we to do? And how are we to classify what "sin" really is? So my take on sin is this…If we differ from God's plan, then we sinned. Take Adam and Eve. They did not listen to God's plan and ate after being explicitly told not to. So we have all sinned, we have all missed the mark. We have all "wandered from the way" and incurred guilt.

Sin

I'm going to go a bit further with this. I would read I John 1:5-2:6 and here is my take on sin.
1. I hate the way people make "degrees" of sin. You either committed sin, or you didn't, and it's all SIN! Whether you committed adultery, or whether you lied, or whether you were a thief, it's sin regardless.
2. I think there are two types of sin.
a. You commit a sin and it's a one time thing and you never do it again.
b. Continual sin (been there done that) is where you have something you deal with, and you do it over and over and over and basically commit the same sin. It cracks me up that some people want to hide it. I John 1:8 says, "If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us." Whoa. Did you catch that?? the truth is not in us!
Which of course means that many of us end up lying to ourselves in the end!
Top of the morning Kirby,
Joe Drew here. Interesting subject, so allow me to throw in my $0.02. According to the greek there is a difference between Jesus saying "go and sin no more," and Butch's reference in 1 John "this is written so that you do not sin...but if you do sin..." that word is called Harmetaus (greek spelling?) and it goes back to the idea of the archer missing the mark. So just for the fun of blogging...check out Galatians chapter 3 about how there is now no condemnation for those in Christ...and answer this question...will you die with unconfessed sin in your life?
